Munching Tips
1. To make pie-crust flaky try adding one-half a spoonful of vinegar to the cold water before mixing.
2. Before baking potatoes let them stand in hot water for fifteen minutes.They will require only half the time to bake.
3. Pour boiling water on oranges and let them stand for five minutes. This will make the white lining come away from the skin and they will be easier to prepare for a pudding.
4. When a child puts a bean in his nose, don't try to dig it out. Put a little cayenne pepper upon his upper lip and he will sneeze it out. 5. Hot Lemonade is one of the best remedies in the world for a cold. It acts promptly and effectively, and has no bad after effects. One lemon properly squeezed, cut in slices, put with sugar, and cover it with half a pint of boiling water. Drink just before going to bed.
6. A spoonful of vinegar added to the water when cooking corned beef will make it more tender. 7. Make sure to crumble dried seasonings with your hands before using to release the pent-up flavor, e.g. basil, oregano and thyme. |
8. When using fresh herbs, use double the amount called for of the dried equivalent.

When icing champagne or white wine when your time is short, add salt to the ice bucket with some water and ice, and place the bottle in- side, up to the neck. It will be ice cold in short order. 11. You'll shed less tears if you cut the root end of the onion off last, or freeze or refrigerate onions before chopping. 12. To keep egg yolks from crumbling when slicing hard cooked eggs, wet the knife before each cut. 13. If the carbonation fizzes out of your champagne, add one raisin to the bottle. The raisin won't affect the taste but its raw sugar will start the bubbling up again. 14. When mayonnaise curdles, put a tablespoon of cold water in a clean bowl and add mayonnaise very gradually. 15. Never mix mayonnaise with meat or fish until ready to serve. 16. A clove of garlic left in the vinegar bottle gives a good flavor. 17. Paprika should be spread in the sun three days to bring out its true flavor. |
